The Complete Guide to Permanent Makeup (PMU) Aftercare
Everything you need to know to protect your investment and get the best results.
Permanent makeup — also known as PMU or cosmetic tattooing — is one of the best investments you can make in your daily beauty routine. Whether you've just had a lip blush, microblading, powder brows, or eyeliner procedure, the work doesn't stop when you leave the studio. What you do in the days and weeks after your treatment plays a huge role in how your results heal, settle, and last.
Here's your complete aftercare guide so you can get the most out of your PMU experience.

The First 24 Hours: Keep It Clean, Keep It Calm
The first day is the most critical. Your skin has just gone through a controlled micro-injury, and it needs time to begin healing.
During the first 24 hours, gently blot the treated area every 30 minutes with a clean, damp cotton pad to remove any lymph fluid. This prevents heavy scabbing, which can pull pigment out during the healing process. Avoid touching the area with your fingers, and keep your hands clean if you must make contact.
Do not apply any products to the area unless your PMU artist specifically instructs you to.
Days 2–7: The Healing Window
This is when the real aftercare discipline kicks in. During the first week, follow these guidelines closely:
Keep the area dry. Avoid getting the treated area wet in the shower. No swimming, saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs. Water and moisture can interfere with pigment retention.
Apply aftercare ointment as directed. Your artist will likely provide or recommend a healing balm. Use only a thin layer — a little goes a long way. Over-moisturizing can suffocate the skin and push pigment out.
Don't pick or scratch. Your skin will start to flake and peel. This is completely normal. Let the flaking happen naturally. Picking at scabs or dry skin will remove pigment and can cause scarring or uneven results.
Avoid makeup on the treated area. No foundation, concealer, brow pencils, lipstick, or eyeliner on or near the area. Cosmetics can introduce bacteria and irritate healing skin.
Sleep on your back if possible. This prevents friction and pressure on the treated area, especially for brow and lip procedures.
Days 7–14: The "Ghosting" Phase
Around the end of the first week and into the second, you may notice your PMU looks lighter or almost like it's fading away. Don't panic — this is completely normal. It's called the "ghosting phase." The top layer of skin is healing over the pigment, temporarily masking the color underneath.
Your true color will re-emerge over the next few weeks as the skin fully heals and settles. Be patient and trust the process.
Weeks 2–6: Long-Term Healing
Even though the surface may look healed, your skin is still recovering underneath. During this period:
Continue to avoid direct sun exposure. UV rays are the number one enemy of PMU longevity. Wear a hat or use SPF 30+ on the area once it's fully healed (typically after week 3–4). Sun damage will cause your pigment to fade and shift color faster.
Avoid chemical exfoliants and retinols. Products with AHA, BHA, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or retinol can accelerate pigment breakdown. Keep these away from the treated area.
Skip facials and chemical peels. Any professional skincare treatment near the PMU area should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks.
No intense workouts for the first 10 days. Heavy sweating can push pigment out and introduce bacteria. Light walks are fine, but save the gym sessions for later.
Your Touch-Up Appointment
Most PMU procedures require a touch-up session 6–8 weeks after the initial appointment. This is a normal and expected part of the process — not a sign that something went wrong. The touch-up allows your artist to refine the shape, adjust the color, and fill in any areas where pigment may not have retained as well.
Don't skip your touch-up. It's what takes your results from good to flawless.
